As most of you know, my educational background is in psychology. I worked in that field for a few years before I realized that what I was doing in my career wasn't feeding my passion for helping people like I had thought it would. I loved fitness and nutrition and so I began making the career transition between psychology and personal training. I loved (and still love!) this new job. It was exciting and fulfilled a major passion of mine but once I started doing it full time, I realized that I was still missing something. So I asked myself, how can I combine my love of fitness and nutrition with my training in psychology?
Months passed and I continued working away as a trainer when an amazing opportunity came my way. I was approached by the Integrative Health Institute (a Toronto-based health care clinic with amazing naturopathic doctors, RMTs, physio, psychotherapy, chiro, you name it!) to come on board as one of their practitioners. It's been a very exciting transition for me, but today is the official 'launch' of my practice as a Healthy Lifestyle Coach focusing on healthy behaviour change and how to implement these changes in your life!
I'll be working at the clinic 2 days/week and spending the rest of my time continuing personal training, doing small group and corporate wellness workshops and (of course) writing and cooking.
I'm so excited for this new endeavour! The feedback I've gotten from this blog was one of the major reasons I've been able to branch out so quickly. Thanks so much for all of your support! As long as you keep reading, I'll keep writing!
For a little more information on what I'll be doing at the clinic keep reading.
What is healthy lifestyle coaching?
A Healthy Lifestyle Coach works with people to help
implement healthy behaviour changes into their lives. Often, clients don’t know
where to start when it comes to healthy eating, adding in exercise or how to reduce stress in their busy lives. Even more challenging is
combining all of these elements together. A healthy lifestyle coach will work with you
to develop practical strategies that will fit into your life. You will work
together to set goals that are achievable and sustainable for your lifestyle
so you can incorporate healthy behaviours
into your life, not the other way around! Your coach will troubleshoot and help problem solve around the barriers you
face, whether it’s a lack of time, knowledge or motivation. Together, by
drawing from your strengths, you and your coach will find ways to overcome
these challenges and achieve your healthy lifestyle goals.
Who should see a healthy lifestyle coach?
Anyone who wants to make positive healthy behaviour changes
in their lives can see a Healthy Lifestyle Coach. You may want to address a
broad spectrum of concerns such as weight loss, fatigue or performance, or you
may have a more specific focus for your coaching, such as how to eat/cook after
discovering a food intolerance, changing your sleep environment or adding in
fitness into your life. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to this type of coaching. Some clients may come in every week or every few weeks to discuss their progress, while other clients may require off-site personal training or grocery shopping assistance. The objective of having a coach is to make healthy behaviour change achievable and sustainable in your life – dependent on your needs and requirements.
