I had to try it....Nutritional Yeast...hmmmm

Anyone who knows me, knows that I'll try pretty much anything once before I write it off. Today was one of those days. I was doing some reading last night and came across something that I thought sounded kind of weird. Weird but strangely healthy - which of course meant I had to try it.

Nutritional Yeast....yes....sounds highly unappetizing but hear me out. Commonly described as nutty, creamy and cheesy in flavour it's used with all kinds of foods. What caught my eye was when I read that they use it on popcorn as a topping in place of all of the butter and salt usually weighing it down. It's also used on veggies, baked potatoes, garlic bread, in quinoa recipes, sprinkled on chicken and more.

Now here's the real bonus. It's actually good for you. At 50 calories (containing 6g of complete protein) per quarter cup, it contains B vitamins and is good for those of you living a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, and those of us who are gluten free!

To give it a shot, tonight I broke a weekday rule and made a couple cups of air-popped  popcorn to test it out with my favourite recipe tester, the ever adventurous Brandon (my husband). Without telling him what it was, I got him to try a bit with me (I also added a bit of sea salt) and amazingly - IT WAS GOOD! Approved by both of us I thought it was safe to share with all of you :)

You can buy it at health/natural food stores, and I found mine at Loblaws from the Bob's Red Mill line. If you've tried it, or have any great uses for it let me know - I have a big bag, and as a carb-conscious girl, there is only so much popcorn I can eat :) Let me know what you think!
